DeSmet is a center of heritages, recreation, industry, and trade. Six of author Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" books are set in and around DeSmet. DeSmet became the seat of Kingsbury county in 1880. The population is approximately 1300. DeSmet is located 90 miles northwest of Sioux Falls, SD. It is served by east-west U.S. Highway 14 and north-south Highway 25.
